This 1-day Course organized by Dr. Geneviève BELLEANNEE
- It will consist of lectures alternating with discussions of cases from 9 AM to 5:30 PM

POT-POURRI IN THYROID PATHOLOGY - Prof. Manuel SOBRINHO-SIMÕES
The chairperson of the session: Prof. Serge GUYETANT (CHRU, Hôpital Trousseau, Tours)
9 AM to 12:30 PM
Justification
A very common pathology, most frequent sources of diagnostic difficulties Recent development of thyroid tumors classification
Objectives
Describe and diagnose the common types of well differentiated (papillary and follicular), poorly differentiated and undifferentiated carcinomas, as well as medullary carcinoma.
Make the differential diagnosis of the major types of encapsulated follicular patterned tumours
– follicular adenoma, follicular variant of papillary carcinoma and minimally invasive follicular carcinoma
– learning to insert in the aforementioned frame the following “entities”: follicular tumour of uncertain malignant potential UMP), well differentiated tumour, UMP, and Non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasia with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP).
Select the most promising immunohistochemical and molecular markers for diagnostic and prognostic/predictive purposes in the field of thyroid oncology.
Settings objectives
The well-known diagnosis of thyroid lesions and pseudo lesions difficulties initiate many requests of second diagnosis by experts

GI TRACT PATHOLOGY - Dr. Rhonda K. YANTISS 2 PM to 5:30 PM
TOPIC 1 - Cancer biopsies, polyps, and artifacts
Justification
Benign mimics of invasive adenocarcinoma can cause significant diagnostic confusion for pathologists and, conversely, pathologists may overlook subtle features of cancer in biopsy material.
Objectives
Distinguish invasive adenocarcinoma from pseudoinvasion in colorectal adenomas Recognize histologic clues to the presence of scant cancer in superficial samples Understand common artifacts that mimic features of carcinoma
Settings objectives
Colorectal polyps that show epithelium in the submucosa pose diagnostic challenges, as many benign lesions can simulate invasive adenocarcinomas, particularly in artifactually distorted samples. Scant carcinoma in biopsy samples can be easily overlooked owing to similarities to benign conditions.
TOPIC 2 - Differential diagnoses of celiac disease and IBD
Justification
A wide variety of different entities cause villous architectural distortion, simulating the features of celiac disease and causing diagnostic challenges for pathologists. Distinguishing between IBD and potential mimics is also problematic.
Objectives
Recognize celiac disease in mucosal biopsy samples and distinguish it from potential mimics Generate a differential diagnosis for chronic colitis Classify infectious agents present in mucosal biopsy samples
Settings objectives
A number of unrelated entities may result in duodenal biopsies that show increased chronic inflammation and variable villous architectural distortion, resulting in diagnostic confusion. Artifacts in normal biopsies can be misinterpreted to represent disease.
